Do's
- Call emergency services if there are injuries.
- Call the police. In some areas police authorities may not come to every accident scene due to the consideration of factors such as
the severity of the accident and location where it happened (e.g. private property). You should however still attempt to notify the police. You should also be aware that most insurance policies require that you notify the of police within a specified time period.
- Collect the names, addresses, telephone numbers, and license numbers from all the involved parties. Ask to see the other parties'
drivers license and vehicle registration to make sure that you have the correct information.
- Collect the names, addresses, and telephone numbers of other passengers and any witnesses that were present.
- If you have a camera, try to take photographs of the damage, the position of the cars, and the accident scene (e.g., traffic controls,
visual obstacles).
- If the owner of a damaged car or damaged property cannot be located, leave a note with the names and addresses of the driver and
owners of the involved cars that are present.
- Notify your insurance company of the accident as soon as possible.
Don'ts
- Do not argue with other parties, rather Save your story for the police and your insurance company
- Do not sign any statements regarding blame or regarding promises to pay for any damage or excess.
- If another party offers to pay your excess, don't sign any form that releases them from further responsibility. By releasing the
other party, you jeopardize your insurance company's subrogation right, and the company may refuse to pay for damage to your car.
