We all hope that we will never be in a situation where our car is stolen or be in an accident, however these things do happen. These situations make vehicle insurance necessary, which is why the following do's are important.
- Do make sure that all the material facts are disclosed to the insurance company. The insurance company trusts that the information you gave them is correct and they calculate an appropriate premium according to that information. If you fail to disclose information, or if you give them the wrong info, they may reject your claim. Make sure that all your relevant documentation is and also make sure that someone you trust knows where it is.
- Do disclose all previous claims. As a policyholder you must disclose all previous claims to the insurer, if you do not do this your policy can be declared null and void. The reality is that people regularly forget to do this and only realise their mistake when they try to submit a new claim. Again, it is important to make sure your documentation is in order.
- Do take due care. Insurance contracts specify that the policyholder must take the necessary care. You should take the necessary steps to prevent damage or loss, for example, don't leave valuable possesions or the keys in the car. The vehicle must also be serviced as this can help prevent an accident.
- Do ensure that the security requirements are in place. If the insurance policy specifies that the vehicle must have a tracking device or an immobiliser installed, it means they won't pay out your claim if it has not been done. You also need to provide the insurance company with proof that you have done this. Some insurance companies also require that the tracking device be activated before full cover is afforded to the client.
- Do ensure that your vehicle is roadworthy. If you drive a car with smooth tyres, for example, it is unlikely that the insurance company will pay out your claim if you are in an accident. It is your responsibility to make sure that your car's tyres are in a good condition. Just like the tyres, you need to make sure that everything else on your car is in a good condition.
